Staff Correspondent The Daily Star Dhaka, October 21 The Bangabandhu-1 is the first Bangladeshi geostationary communications satellite, which was launched from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, USA on May 11, 2018. The satellite is named after the father of the nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Thales Alenia Space, a French company, designed and built the satellite, which underwent several test runs earlier.

Falcon-9, a brand new rocket, carried the satellite into the orbit. The ground control stations for the satellite are in Betbunia Gazipur in Bangladesh. It would be located at the 119.1° East longitude geostationary slot. With a total mass of 3700 kg and powered by 2 deployable solar arrays and batteries, the expected longevity of the satellite is 15 years. For Bangladesh, this has potentials to bring a new chapter in terms of technological progression. The satellite will bring uninterrupted telecommunication system in the country.It's a matter of great pride that Bangladesh is now a member of an elite club comprising of only 57 states that own at least a satellite.
